For $10,000 a month, the 10-year Treasury says you need about $2.29 million and JEPQ says about $1.06 million. Retirees put about $10 billion into JEPQ this year, and it's now about the third-biggest actively managed ETF in America.

Where the 11% comes from

JEPQ owns Nasdaq stocks, a third of it in 7 tech names, and sells covered calls through equity-linked notes from 5 banks. The option money shows up as interest, which is why the check is mostly taxed as ordinary income.

Why it didn't melt like QYLD

QYLD is down about 25% in 13 years. It sells calls on the whole index at the current price every month, so it gives away almost all of the upside. JEPQ sells calls on only part of the fund, and its share price is up since launch.

What the check costs

Since 2022 the monthly check has cost owners part of the upside versus QQQ. From the April 2025 low to the end of 2025, QQQ came back 48% and JEPQ 38%. In the fiscal year it returned 25.75%, the fund booked a $3.17 billion realized loss on its options.

Why the check keeps changing

The payout follows fear. When the Nasdaq volatility index (VXN) is high, the options pay more and the check grows. When markets calm down, it shrinks.
