What you own in BND

More than 11,000 bonds. 69% is backed by the U.S. government, the rest is investment-grade corporate and other debt, and there is no junk. About a fifth of the fund is government-backed mortgage bonds, the piece almost nobody knows is in there.

The one rule: the seesaw

When interest rates go up, bond prices go down. BND's duration is 5.8 years, so a 1-point rise in rates means a price drop of about 5.8%. That is how a fund full of government bonds fell 21%.

The price chart hides the paycheck

BND trades below its 2007 launch price, but with the interest reinvested it is up 74% since launch. The rule of thumb: hold a bond fund for about its duration and the higher income starts to make up for the price drop.

The same bonds took down Silicon Valley Bank

SVB held about $91 billion of mostly government-backed mortgage bonds. Rates rose, the prices fell, and depositors ran in March 2023. The video covers whether BND can have an SVB moment and why your mortgage rate follows the 10-year.

Is the bond market close to a bottom?

The video goes through the 2023 pattern, the October 5 low on heavy volume, the Fed timing and midterm-year patterns, the bull and bear case, BND vs cash, T-bills and AGG, and the 3 things to check every morning.
