Silver hit a record $121.30 on January 29, 2026 and fell 31% the next day, its worst day this century. By July 17 it was down 55% from the top, in a year when the world used more silver than mines and recycling could supply for a 6th straight year.

How it got there

Silver ran from $28.94 to $121 in 13 months on gold, Chinese demand and its critical-mineral status, plus industrial use in solar, EVs and AI data centers. At the top SLV traded 164 million shares a day. The break came January 30.

The 2 paths after a crash

After 1980 and 2011, silver stayed down for years: the Hunt brothers' collapse, and 5 margin hikes into a 72% drop. After 2008 and 2020, it ran 5x and 152%. What picked the path each time was real yields, and the 10-year real yield is at 2.87%, near the highest since 2008.

The shortage

The World Silver Survey shows 6 straight years of deficits. Supply can't respond quickly because most silver is a by-product of other mines, while solar is thrifting, with demand there estimated to fall 19%.

Silver follows gold

Silver lags gold at every bottom, then beat gold off the low 4 out of 4 times. This year silver's low came 17 days after gold's.

How to own it

SLV, SIVR and PSLV all hold physical metal, and gains in all three are taxed at the 28% collectibles rate. $55 is the line in the sand in the video.
